February Social Media Expedition

I’ve only just started making a real effort to track the results that I’m getting from my social media efforts and while it is slow I am finding that it definitely does make a difference.  What have I noticed?

  • Traffic on this blog has increased
  • Comments on the blog have increased
  • I’m developing relationships with people that I consider to be influential
  • People are starting to know who I am

I found this nifty little video on YouTube.  Short but sweet:

The last thing he talks about is tools.  I’ve found one that I like called Kurrently and it tracks what people are saying on Twitter and Facebook.  I know there are other tools out there that track keywords but I like this one because I can simply go in there and check out what people are saying at any given time.

Of course, I also use Hootsuite, which allows you to track keywords, too – but it also allows you to see things like how often people are clicking on your links.  And if you click on someone’s name (including your own), it tells you how much “klout” they have.  This is kind of bugging me though.  I mean what exactly do you have to do to have klout?  Something I need to look into a little bit more…

So what are you doing to track your results in social media?  Or do you?  Does it really matter?  Hmmm – food for thought!

I’m sure you all know what spam is and it happens all over the place.  It’s in our inbox, our message boxes on Facebook sometimes, on Facebook groups and pages – but did you know that spammers are now taking advantage of tagging to spam people!  And this is something we really can’t protect ourselves from.  Check out this great video (it’s only about 6 minutes long) about how NOT to market yourself on Facebook:

I like how she stresses that you have to build trust in a website/Facebook Page/blog – whatever – before you will go on to actually do any reading there. Personally, if I smell even the slightest hint of spam, I’m out of there. If I feel the coldness of pyramids or MLM marketing, I run to warmer sites. And what this guy has done is all of the above.

Has this ever happened to you? If it has, what did you do about it?

Ok, I know this is kind cheesy but you gotta love it. This guy is having fun with social media and you can tell he totally loves what he does. Will I follow him? You bet I will!

Ok, this little video is pretty light and easy and really, I’m sure they are things we all know already. I mean we should know it. It’s not like it isn’t information that we already see all over the Internet. But take a quick peek at it – it isn’t long – and then I’ll tell you why I liked it.

Know why I liked it? Because Tip 3 is so me! I actually did this exact thing last week. Completely crashed out at my computer. And not just for a couple minutes – for an hour!

I finally managed to make myself wake up and I had a good old kink in my neck.

So remember not to push it too far or you’ll have a keyboard imprint on your cheek!

Have you been dying to get some private clients under your belt?  If you have, you should read my post on Getting Private Clients first.  Go ahead, it will open in a new window and I’ll be here waiting when you’re done. :)

Now that you’ve read that you’re likely thinking, “I just don’t have the time to do that!” But it doesn’t have to take that much time.  You can cut down on time a lot if you use some organization techniques make it go faster.

I could tell you how to do this but I figure you’ll find it a lot more enjoyable if you can see me do it!  So, I’ve created this little tutorial for you.  Hopefully, you’ll find this helpful.

BTW – I can’t take credit for the idea of how to do this.  I first read about it at Freelance Writing Gigs where Carly Schuna blogged about Being a Craigslist Millionaire.  I’m not doing it exactly the way she’s suggested but I’ve used most of her ideas.  Thanks Carly!
