Want to starting making more money from your blog? It isn’t easy is it? I know that it is something I struggle with. Just because I am a writer does not mean that I am a great money making blogger. So, of course, what is the first thing I do? I start looking around at other blogs that I know are making money.

One of the first things that I have noticed that successful bloggers do is they always, always have their readers in mind. They are constantly asking themselves, “What are my readers looking for when they come here?” And how do they figure that out?

They go to their stats and see what search terms people are using to find their blog. Are they looking for blogging advice or answers on how to get started as a writer? When you look at the search terms that are being used to find your blog you can learn a lot about the people who are reading your blog posts. Work with that.

Remember that no matter how you choose to monetize your blog, content always comes first. If you have a blog full of crap people are just going to go back to the search engines.

Now, once you’ve got people there how are you going to make money from their attention?

Adsense

Adsense is the most obvious way that you can monetize a blog. You’ll notice I don’t use it and I’ll be honest with you…back in the day when Adsense was getting really big I did something to piss them off. Don’t ask me what – no clue – but I did something or they think I did something and they cancelled my account. So keep that in mind. They can cancel your account and all the earnings you have made with no notice and they don’t have to give you proof of anything.

If you do decide to go with Adsense you can put ads in the sidebars or the footer or between blog posts. Try to make them match your site colors. There us supposed to be “prime” places to put your ads but truthfully – I don’t think it makes a whole hell of a lot of difference.

Your Own Products

Yes – sell something that you own all of the rights to. Create an ebook or a mini-course.

Now, this is something I can get behind. I’m working on an ebook. If I ever completely finish it you can bet I’ll be selling it here!

If you’re selling something you can also put it on clickbank or paydotcom where others can sell it and collect an affiliate income from it. That’s a good option if you aren’t great at marketing – let other people market it for you.

Promote Others’ Products

Clickbank and Paydotcom are likely the most popular places to find products to sell but you can also include Affiliate links from Amazon. Actually, if you look around there are many options for selling others’ products. Find something you can get behind and work it. Write a review and put it on its own page. Embed a link within a blog post when it is relevant.

Experiment, Rinse, & Repeat

Finally, remember that just because something works for another blogger doesn’t mean that it will work for you. Don’t be afraid to be creative. Come up with new ideas, new products, new things that can help you make cash.

And when one of your experiments actually works?

Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat – in otherwords, keep doing it again and again!

A few days ago I talked about putting together an e-book site that anyone can participate in and sell their e-books and we all can promote.  There has been quite a bit of interest from new and established writers alike and I’m working on putting the site together so we can all make it work.

Now, here’s the thing.  As much as I would love to get this going asap I have already committed to doing TWO blog challenged over the course of August and into September.  So, what would you all think if we got a group of us together and did this in October?
